In Part One of my exclusive series of “The Woodcock Johnson Test Of Achievement”, I described the different elements of leadership, and how they relate to achieving great leadership potential. In this Part Two, I will describe how leadership impacts your employees and how you can make them better. There are many different leadership styles including autocratic, participative, and consultative. Some leaders like to micromanage every step of the project, micromanaging often results in the downfall of a project. Micromanaging can be very ineffective if done for too long. Here are some examples of micromanaging:

1. Don’t spend time talking with people. If you don’t hear from the person who has responsibility for a certain aspect of the project, they don’t know what to do or how to do it. You need to know who has the responsibility for a particular aspect of the project. Then, when they have a question, they will have someone who can give them the right answer.

2. Don’t give people real-life responsibilities. If you assign tasks and projects to people, they don’t take them seriously. If people don’t take your duties seriously, how can you expect them to take your view of the world seriously. This is why learning to listen is extremely valuable.

3. Make sure that you don’t spend much time with those who are not on your team. Often, we spend so much time trying to help others on our team that we forget to nurture those relationships with many other people. The world needs us, and we need them.

4. Get rid of the divide. Find a way to unify your group, including your team members. Sometimes, there can be an almost palpable sense of division in a group. Find ways to bridge that divide.

5. Work on the big picture. Woodcock Johnson believed that people live in the moment, and he wanted to see that attitude in his employees as well. Johnson believed that he could make big changes in the company only if he focused on the big picture. He worked to create a structure that gave workers a sense of accomplishment for each small thing they did.

6. Have open communication. Johnson used humor to get employees to talk. This worked, and it helped to create a relaxed atmosphere where people were willing to voice their opinions. This same approach can be used to foster camaraderie among a group.

Today’s business has changed so much, but it hasn’t lost all of its heart. Woodcock Johnson was a bold leader who led by example. If you’re going to be a successful leader, learn from him. It’s a surefire formula for success!

7. Always be learning. Woodcock Johnson understood that a business needs to continually adapt so it can continue to grow. When you learn today, you learn for tomorrow. Johnson made sure everyone in the company knew that the company wasn’t stagnant.

8. Be careful what you say. In order to be a truly effective leader, you need to have some tact when dealing with your team. Johnson’s quote about cutting out the middle men is extremely wise. In an increasingly professional world, you need to say less and do more.

9. Get the job done. Woodcock Johnson was a born leader. He had no problem getting things done, even when it meant upsetting others. It’s important to always keep your team informed about what’s going on so they can contribute.
